CAM

Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco: the public transport company operating the bus network throughout the Principality of Monaco.

Carabiniers du Prince

The military corps of the Principality of Monaco responsible for protecting the Sovereign Prince, the princely family and the Palace. They also perform ceremonial honours at official events.

Carré d'Or

The 'Golden Square' — a prestigious luxury shopping and commercial district in Monte-Carlo characterized by high-end boutiques, exclusive shops, and fine dining establishments.

Carte de sejour

Official document issued by the Surete Publique (Public Security) authorising a foreign national to reside in the Principality of Monaco.

CCSS

Caisses Sociales de Monaco: the umbrella body administering Monaco's social security system, including health insurance, pensions, family benefits and workplace accident coverage.

Chapiteau

A large tent or 'big top' — a temporary or semi-permanent canvas structure used to house performances, exhibitions, events, and gatherings. In Monaco, chapiteaux are notably associated with circus festivals and seasonal entertainment venues.

CHPG

Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace: the main public hospital of the Principality of Monaco, located on avenue Pasteur.

CNAM

Acronym for 'Caisse Nationale d'Assurance Maladie' (National Health Insurance Fund) — Monaco's primary health insurance and social security body responsible for managing healthcare coverage and medical benefits.

Corporate tax

Impot sur les benefices des societes: a 25% tax on profits applicable to companies in Monaco that generate more than 25% of their turnover outside the Principality.

Monegasque

A person holding Monegasque nationality, or an adjective describing anything related to the Principality of Monaco. Monegasque citizens represent a small minority of the resident population.

Monégasque

An adjective or noun referring to Monaco and its people. Monégasque can denote: a citizen of Monaco; the traditional Monégasque language (a Romance language with French, Italian, and Occitan influences); or characteristics of Monégasque culture, heritage, and identity.

MonEntreprise (Glossary)

The Monegasque government's online platform for businesses, enabling them to complete administrative procedures, filings and company formation or management formalities.

MonGuichet (Glossary)

The official one-stop online platform providing integrated access to administrative services, permits, applications, and public information for residents and businesses in Monaco.

MonServicePublic

The Monegasque government's digital platform centralising online services and administrative procedures for residents, citizens and businesses in the Principality.

Monte-Carlo (Glossary)

Both a geographical district in central Monaco and a global brand identity associated with luxury, glamour, and high-stakes gaming. The district contains the iconic Monte-Carlo Casino and luxury shopping areas.

Mutuelle

Supplementary health insurance (complementary coverage) that covers costs not reimbursed by Monaco's statutory social security system, including deductibles, co-payments, and additional services.

SAM (Société Anonyme Monégasque) — Glossary

Societe Anonyme Monegasque: a joint-stock company under Monegasque law, broadly equivalent to a public limited company or corporation.

Sapeurs-Pompiers

The Sapeurs-Pompiers are Monaco's professional fire and rescue services, trained and equipped to respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, and rescue operations throughout the principality.

SBM

Societe des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers a Monaco: historic group operating the Casino de Monte-Carlo, several luxury hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues in the Principality.

SMA

Societe Monegasque d'Assainissement: the company responsible for collecting, sorting and processing household and commercial waste in the Principality of Monaco.

SMEG

Societe Monegasque de l'Electricite et du Gaz: the licensed utility company responsible for distributing electricity and gas throughout the Principality of Monaco.

Socca

A thin, crispy flatbread made from chickpea flour, traditionally prepared throughout the Nice-Monaco region. Socca is typically served hot, often drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with pepper.

State housing sector

State-owned housing stock in Monaco, allocated at subsidised rents exclusively to Monegasque citizens and, under certain conditions, to eligible residents.

Stocafi

A traditional Monégasque dish made from salt-dried (stockfish) cod, typically prepared with potatoes, tomatoes, olives, and garlic. It represents iconic Monégasque culinary heritage.

Surete Publique

Direction de la Surete Publique: Monaco's national police force, responsible for public safety, border control and the issuance of residence permits (cartes de sejour).

V
