Mareterra
Monaco's newest district, built on six hectares reclaimed from the sea off Anse du Portier and inaugurated in late 2024.
Mareterra is the new Monaco district built on six hectares of land reclaimed from the sea off Anse du Portier, between the Larvotto and the Grimaldi Forum. It is the largest territorial extension of the Principality since the creation of Fontvieille in the 1970s and increased Monaco's overall surface area by roughly 3%.
Construction began in 2017 and was completed in December 2024. The development includes:
- A high-end residential strip with buildings designed by architects including Renzo Piano and Norman Foster
- A new public park and pedestrian promenade extending the seafront walk
- An expansion of the Grimaldi Forum congress centre
- A small marina and dry port
- Public art, including a permanent installation along the promenade
Mareterra was conceived under a strict environmental brief. Posidonia seagrass meadows in the construction footprint were transplanted before reclamation works, and biodiversity panels were integrated into the perimeter caisson to encourage marine colonisation. The reclamation method used a ring of precast caissons rather than open-sea fill, in order to limit sediment dispersion.
The district is freely accessible on foot and connects to the rest of Monaco via the seafront promenade and the existing CAM bus lines serving Larvotto and the Grimaldi Forum.
