The numbers that matter
Four numbers cover almost every emergency in Monaco. All are free and staffed around the clock, and all can be dialled from any phone — including a roaming foreign mobile or a handset with no SIM card.
| Situation | Number |
|---|---|
| Any emergency (European number) | 112 |
| Police — Direction de la Sûreté Publique | 17 |
| Fire, accident, medical emergency — Sapeurs-Pompiers | 18 |
| Distress at sea | 196 |
If you are unsure whether to call 17 or 18, dial 112 and the operator will route the call.
15 is not the medical emergency number in Monaco. 15 reaches the French SAMU; the Principality has no separate ambulance service of its own. Medical emergencies go to 18 or 112. Ambulances operated by the Corps des Sapeurs-Pompiers carry out emergency medical transport, coordinating with the Princess Grace Hospital's mobile intensive care unit.
Hospital, clinics and specialist lines
| Service | Contact |
|---|---|
| CHPG emergency department | +377 97 98 97 69 |
| CHPG (switchboard) | +377 97 98 99 00 |
| CHPG paediatric emergencies | +377 97 98 95 33 |
| Monaco Cardio-Thoracic Centre | +377 92 16 80 00 |
| IM2S (Monegasque Institute of Sports Medicine and Surgery) | +377 99 99 10 00 |
| IM2S trauma emergencies (8am–8pm, daily) | +377 99 99 10 23 |
| Screening centre | +377 97 98 84 12 |
| Poison control (Marseille centre) | +33 4 91 75 25 25 |
The Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace on avenue Pasteur is the Principality's only hospital. Its emergency department never closes and takes walk-ins. IM2S runs a daytime trauma service that is worth knowing about for a sprain or a straightforward fracture picked up playing sport — it saves a trip through general emergencies.
On-call doctors, dentists and pharmacies
For something real but not an emergency — a fever climbing on a Sunday, a broken tooth, a prescription needed overnight — Monaco publishes its official duty rota at monacosante.mc: doctors, dentists, osteopaths and pharmacies, with the hours each one covers. Check it before setting out, as the rota changes weekly.
Police and non-urgent matters
For a theft, a formal complaint, a lost-property report or an administrative question, do not call 17 — go to the Sûreté Publique directly.
| Service | Contact |
|---|---|
| Direction de la Sûreté Publique | +377 93 15 30 15 |
| Address | 9 rue Suffren-Reymond, MC 98000 Monaco |
| Lost property | +377 93 15 30 18 |
The Direction de la Sûreté Publique covers every policing service in the Principality, and it is also the authority that issues residence permits through its Residents Section. Monaco is not policed by the French gendarmerie: its force is entirely Monegasque, alongside the Compagnie des Carabiniers du Prince, which guards the Palace and the institutions.
Specific situations
Road accident. Call 17 or 112. Put the hazard lights on, get clear of the carriageway, and do not move an injured person. In Monaco's many tunnels and underground roads, head for the marked emergency exit rather than walking back against the traffic.
Fire. Call 18. Evacuate without using the lift, close doors behind you, and go to the building's assembly point. Tell the crew about anyone you know is still inside and where the underground car parks are.
Distress at sea. Call 196, or use VHF channel 16. Port Hercule and Port de Fontvieille have craft on hand, and the fire service covers water rescue.
Victim of violence. 17 and 112 both bring an immediate response. A support line is also available on 39 19.
What to say when you call
Response times in Monaco are short — the country is 2.02 km² — but its verticality makes addresses hard to find. A few habits save minutes:
- Give the building name before the street number. Monegasque residences are far better known than street numbering.
- State the level and entrance. Many buildings are served by several entrances at different heights, linked by public lifts.
- Say if access is through an underground car park, and on which level.
- If you can, post someone at the entrance to guide the crew in.
- Stay on the line until the operator ends the call.
Operators work in French; English and Italian are widely understood.
Worth keeping to hand
Save 112 and the CHPG emergency number in your contacts, and keep your residence permit or passport and your health insurance details accessible — the emergency department asks for them on admission.
