Stade Louis II: stadium tours, AS Monaco matches and the public sports complex

In short

Stade Louis II is much more than AS Monaco's ground. Inaugurated on 25 January 1985 by Prince Rainier III, it replaced the first Stade Louis II of 1939 and stacks an entire sports complex into one building: the football pitch sits 8.35 m above street level, on the roof of the car park, and underneath the stands are a 4,560-seat arena, a three-pool aquatic centre, a weight room and rooms for more than thirty sports. It belongs to the State and is run by the Direction du Stade Louis II.

For a visitor, that means three ways in: a cheap guided tour on weekdays in season, a match ticket, or simply a swim.

The guided tour

The tour is one of the best-value visits in Monaco — and one of the least known.

• Price: €5.80; reduced rate €2.90 for under-12s, over-65s and groups of 10 or more; free for children under 5.
• When: Monday to Friday at 10:15, 11:45, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00, except public holidays and event days.
• Season: seasonal only. In 2026 it ran from 1 April to 13 October; next season's dates are posted on stadelouis2.mc.
• Booking: none, except for groups of more than 10. Arrive at the ticket desk 10 minutes early; tours leave on time and take up to 30 people.
• Languages: French, English or Italian.
• Who: unaccompanied under-16s are not admitted. Visitors with reduced mobility can take part, except in the AS Monaco dressing-room area (there is a half-landing).

Plan around the fixtures. There are no tours on football match days or on Herculis day; on the afternoon before a match the tour skips the players' dressing rooms and the pitch, and on basketball match days (and the afternoon before) it skips the Salle Gaston Médecin. Other areas can be closed for events or works — you are told before you pay.

While you are there, the indoor pedestrian gallery hosts Il était une première fois, the exhibition marking the stadium's 40th anniversary: the first match, first concert, first world record.

Going to a match

AS Monaco's home matches are the stadium's main event, with European nights in midweek.

• Tickets: on billetterie.asmonaco.com, or at the stadium's ticket windows, whose hours change with each fixture. Cards only online; the windows also take cash and American Express.
• Entry: access QR codes appear in the AS Monaco app 90 hours before kick-off. The gates open two hours before.
• Young fans: schoolchildren under 18 from Monaco and the neighbouring communes get in free (gala matches excluded), and under-12s have reduced rates in the family sections.
• Rules: bottles, helmets, lasers, pyrotechnics and weapons are banned; a free cloakroom operates outside the stadium. Away supporters must show ID and buy one ticket each. Reselling outside the official platform is forbidden.

Renovation works until 2027

A modernisation programme started in summer 2025 and runs in phases until 2027, so the stadium can keep hosting AS Monaco, the Herculis meeting and the Games of the Small States of Europe, which Monaco hosts in May 2027. It covers the stands, refreshment bars, toilets, circulation and accessibility, and is the first step of a longer plan running to 2035.

The most visible change is the seating: a mosaic of red and white seats chosen by Prince Albert II, installed in stages until May 2027. In the popular and pesage sections the new seats are retractable, so fans can stand as in a kop, or sit for athletics.

The practical consequence: capacity is reduced while sections are closed — it fell in stages during the 2025–26 season. The 17,715-seat figure is the full capacity; check the seating plan when you buy.

Athletics, basketball and the rest

• Track: eight lanes, with jumping pits and throwing areas used daily by Monaco's schools and clubs. Every July it hosts Herculis, the Diamond League meeting voted best meeting of 2014 by the IAAF — see the Herculis guide.
• Salle Gaston Médecin: the multi-sports arena, 4,560 seats in basketball configuration since the summer 2022 works, home of the city's top-level basketball — see basketball in Monaco. It also hosts judo, fencing, boxing and gymnastics events.
• The pitch: hybrid grass, 105 × 68 m, to UEFA standards. Between 1998 and 2012 it staged the UEFA Super Cup every August; rugby and archery have been played here too.

The public facilities

The complex is open Monday to Saturday 07:00–23:00 and Sunday 08:00–19:00 from September to June; in July and August, weekdays 07:00–21:30, Saturday 08:00–18:00 and Sunday 08:00–15:00.

Centre Nautique Prince Albert II — a 50 m Olympic pool, a learners' pool and a diving pit.

Reduced rate: under-12s and over-60s; under-2s free. Public hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 07:15–14:30, Saturday 13:00–18:30, Sunday 08:00–13:30, closed Wednesday. Weight room — single entry €12.80, 10 entries €106.10 (valid three months), €80.60 a month, €583.50 a year; over-60s pay €40.30 a month or €297.10 a year. A rechargeable access card costs €2.20. Registration form on stadelouis2.mc.

Getting there

• Bus: CAM lines 4 and 6 serve the stadium.
• Train: about 15 minutes on foot from Monaco-Monte-Carlo station.
• Car: the stadium has its own public car park, part of Monaco's network with the standard tariff — see parking in Monaco. Coaches use the Saint-Antoine car park.
• Helicopter: the Monaco heliport is less than 400 m away.

The stadium sits at the western edge of Fontvieille, a short walk from the shopping centre, the Fontvieille park and the Princess Grace Rose Garden — easy to combine in a half-day.
