AS Monaco FC

AS Monaco FC is the Principality's professional football club and one of the most storied teams in French football. Founded in 1924, the club competes in Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, and has a proud history of domestic and European success.

History and honours

AS Monaco has won the French championship eight times, along with five Coupes de France. The club reached the UEFA Champions League final in 2004, losing to FC Porto, and has regularly featured in European competition. Over the decades, the club has been home to global stars including Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet, Kylian Mbappe, Radamel Falcao and Lilian Thuram.

The club is owned by Russian businessman Dmitry Rybolovlev, who acquired it in 2011 and oversaw a period of significant investment and sporting revival.

Stade Louis II

AS Monaco plays its home matches at the Stade Louis II in the Fontvieille district. Built in 1985, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 18,500 and is recognisable for its distinctive nine arches along the roof. Beneath the football pitch sits a full-size athletics track and sports complex used for other events.

The stadium also hosted the annual UEFA Super Cup from 1998 to 2012.

Attending a match

Matchday at the Stade Louis II is a pleasant experience. The compact ground means good sightlines from most seats, and the atmosphere, while not as intense as larger French stadiums, is friendly and welcoming.

  • Tickets: available on the AS Monaco website and at the box office; Ligue 1 matches are generally affordable
  • Getting there: the stadium is in Fontvieille, reachable by bus or a short walk downhill from the Condamine
  • Food and drink: concession stands inside the ground and restaurants in nearby Fontvieille

The academy

AS Monaco operates one of the most respected youth academies in European football. Based at the Centre de Performance at La Turbie, just above Monaco, the academy has produced a succession of players who went on to represent top clubs worldwide.
