Princess Grace Hospital (CHPG): emergencies, appointments and who can be treated

In short

The Centre Hospitalier Princesse Grace (CHPG) is Monaco's only public hospital. It sits on the heights of the Principality, close to the Jardin Exotique, and serves not just Monaco's residents but the neighbouring French communes from the Italian border to Villefranche-sur-Mer — around 125,000 people in all.

Its roots go back to 1902, when Prince Albert I opened a modern 130-bed hospital; it took Princess Grace's name in 1958. Today it is a large establishment: in 2024 it had 851 beds and places (356 in medicine, surgery and obstetrics, 52 in psychiatry and 443 in geriatric care and home hospitalisation), recorded 46,687 emergency visits, 172,211 outpatient consultations and 9,140 operations, and employed 237 doctors and 2,680 other staff.

The CHPG is not required to follow French hospital rules, but it has voluntarily sought certification from France's Haute Autorité de Santé since 2007. In July 2025 it was awarded the top "Haute Qualité des soins" rating, scoring 100% in all three chapters.

In an emergency

• Call 18 or 112. In Monaco the Sapeurs-Pompiers handle medical emergencies as well as fires, working with the hospital's mobile emergency unit (SMUR). 15, the French SAMU number, does not apply here. The full list of numbers is in our emergency numbers guide.
• The adult emergency department is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year: +377 97 98 97 69.
• Children have their own emergency department: +377 97 98 95 33.
• Patients who need watching for up to 24 hours are kept in the short-stay unit next to A&E (UHCD) before being sent home or admitted.

Who can be treated, and who pays

The emergency department treats everyone. For planned care, the hospital's own rules are:

If you have no Monegasque or French cover, or rely on private insurance, the stay is billed at daily rates set by the Government and published in the Journal de Monaco each January. For 2026 they include, per day:

• Maternity: €1,558.68
• Paediatrics: €1,568.46
• Surgery: €1,898.66
• Neonatology: €2,634.71
• Intensive care: €3,413.12
• Psychiatry: €1,075.00

Booking a consultation

The CHPG has more than 60 specialties, from cardiology and oncology to ophthalmology, robotic surgery and a breast-cancer centre. There are three ways to get an appointment:

1. The CHPG patient portal, mon-portail-patient.chpg.mc.
2. MonacoSanté (monacosante.mc), the Government platform that also lists the Principality's private doctors and their appointment slots.
3. The department's secretariat, by phone or e-mail — each specialty page on chpg.mc gives the details.

If the first slot offered is too far away, the hospital itself suggests asking your doctor for a referral letter, e-mailing the secretariat to explain your situation, or asking to go on the cancellation list. To find a GP first, see finding a doctor in Monaco.

Staying in hospital

• Before you come: download the welcome booklet (French, English or Italian) from the Hospitalisation page of chpg.mc. It covers admission, your stay and discharge.
• Trusted person: Law 1.454 lets you name a personne de confiance who can be consulted if you cannot express your wishes. It is optional, and the form is on chpg.mc.
• A relative staying with you: one person can be allowed to stay overnight for an hébergement accompagnant fee. This includes a bed and breakfast, and requires a single room, which is billed as an extra. Lunch and dinner are charged separately. Every new father is offered a meal in the mother's room.
• Medical records: you can access your file. Send the form to the director or to dossierpatient@chpg.mc (+377 97 98 83 94).

Getting there

• Address: 1 avenue Pasteur, MC 98012 Monaco.
• Bus: CAM lines 3 and 5 stop at "Hôpital", right opposite the main entrance. Line 2 ends at "Jardin Exotique", and a public lift 50 m away takes you up to the hospital.
• Car: a public underground car park, with the first hour free. Spaces at the front are kept for emergency vehicles.
• Taxi: the Monaco taxi rank, +377 93 15 01 01, runs 24/7.
• Reduced mobility: there are ramps and lifts throughout, and free wheelchairs at several points. A free electric cart runs Monday to Friday, 7:45 to 19:30.

The new hospital

A new CHPG is being built on the same site, without closing the current hospital, with completion planned by 2032. It will have 394 beds, a 66-bed psychiatry unit, a 28-bed "swing" unit and around fifteen operating theatres. There will also be a car park with 650 car spaces and 180 for two-wheelers. Most rooms will be single, many with sea views. The first new building was opened for guided visits during the Journées du Patrimoine in September 2026.

Until the work is finished, expect changes to access routes around the site, and check chpg.mc before a planned visit.
