Autumn in Monaco

Autumn is the season when Monaco hands the city back to the people who live in it. The August crowds leave, the rentrée restarts the offices and the schools, and within a few weeks the Principality runs through some of its most important fixtures of the year — a boat show that fills the harbour, a national holiday that fills Place du Palais, and a charity race that circles Fontvieille day and night.

It is a season with two faces. September is still summer, with a sea warmer than it was in June and a port shut down for the Yacht Show. November is already winter as far as daylight goes — but it is the most Monegasque month of the year.

The weather

September — 23-26°C by day, evenings still mild, around thirteen hours of daylight. Apart from the crowds, little separates it from summer.

October — 19-22°C, the best compromise of the season: warm enough to walk all day, cool enough to climb up to the Jardin Exotique without suffering for it.

November — 15-17°C by day, nights near 10°C, and daylight down to just over nine hours by the end of the month.

Two things are worth knowing. First, the sea stays warm long after the air does: around 24°C in September, 21°C in October, 18°C in November — swimming in early October is more pleasant than in June. Second, autumn is the wettest part of the year on this coast: the Mediterranean episodes of September and October deliver short, intense rain, usually followed by a completely clear sky. They are easy to work around — much of Monaco can be crossed under cover, through the public lifts and passageways, free all year.

The autumn calendar

Monaco Classic Week (biennial — no 2026 edition; next 8–11 September 2027) — the gathering of classic yachts and vintage sailing boats staged by the Yacht Club de Monaco at Port Hercule, with a free quayside Village. Monaco Yacht Show (23-26 September 2026) — the 35th edition of the world's largest superyacht show, at Port Hercule. A Wednesday-only pass costs 400 € but excludes the quayside where the yachts are berthed; dockside access runs Thursday to Saturday and a full day costs 700 €. Doors open at 10:00 and close at 18:30, or 18:00 on Saturday. The harbour is closed to the public for much of the week and hotels sell out. Monte-Carlo Gala for Planetary Health (late September) — the annual gala of the Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo. Invitation only, but one of the most visible evenings of the season. See the gala page.

SPORTEL Monaco (19-21 October 2026) — the international sports media and technology convention, at the Grimaldi Forum, 10 avenue Princesse Grace. A trade event, but it fills the hotels a second time in the season. SPORTEL event page.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo autumn season (from mid-October) — the company opens its season at the Grimaldi Forum and performs into December. It is the most accessible cultural offer of the autumn. Season page.

No Finish Line (mid-November) — nine days and nine nights of continuous running and walking on a circuit at the Chapiteau de Fontvieille, avenue des Ligures. Every kilometre covered by a participant is worth one euro, paid by the Children & Future association towards children's projects. Open to everyone, at any age, at any hour. Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival (late November) — the Société des Bains de Mer's jazz festival, in the Salle Garnier of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, reaching its 20th edition in 2026. A room seating under five hundred: the programme sells out early. Festival page.

19 November: National Day

Monaco's national holiday is the most important date of the autumn, and the one occasion when the Principality stages itself for its own citizens. The date was chosen by Prince Rainier III in 1952; it corresponded to his patron saint's feast day, and the tradition has been maintained under Prince Albert II.

The order of the day is stable from year to year:

• 9:30 — solemn thanksgiving mass and Te Deum at Monaco Cathedral, attended by the Princely Family.
• 11:00 — military review and the presentation of ranks and decorations in the Court of Honour of the Prince's Palace.
• 11:30 — military parade on Place du Palais, followed by the Princely Family's appearance on the balcony.

It is a public holiday: government offices, banks and many shops are closed, and transport runs a reduced service. To get a proper view of Place du Palais you need to be up on the Rock early in the morning. The National Day guide covers access and vantage points.

What closes, what stays open

• Prince's Palace — the State Apartments close on 15 October and reopen only on 30 March. €10 full price, €5 for ages 6-17 and students while they are open.
• Changing of the guard — continues daily at 11:55 on Place du Palais, free, all year round.
• Monte-Carlo Beach — the seasonal hotel and beach club close in mid-October, as do most of the Larvotto clubs. The public beaches remain open all year.
• Jardin Exotique — open year-round since it reopened on 30 March 2026. €12 full price, €6 for ages 4-17 and students, €9 for over-65s, free for Monegasque residents. See the Jardin Exotique guide.

Planning an autumn trip

Hotel rates track the calendar closely: they peak during Yacht Show week, rise again for SPORTEL, and fall away sharply for the rest of October and November. For value, aim for the first half of October — the sea is still warm, the city is quiet, and everything is open except the Palace. The accommodation guide breaks the districts down.

The bus costs €1.50 by contactless card or through Monapass, €2 on board, and a 24-hour pass €5.50; the network is free for residents aged 60 and over. What to pack

A light waterproof, more useful here than a heavy coat. Layers: September is a shirtsleeves month, November wants a jacket the moment the sun goes down. Shoes that hold on wet steps — Monaco is a vertical city and autumn makes it slippery. And swimwear in September and October, without hesitation.
