About the Oceanographic Museum
Perched dramatically on the cliffside of the Rock of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum was founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I, a pioneering ocean explorer. The museum combines a world-class aquarium with exhibits on marine science, ocean conservation and the history of oceanography. It is one of Monaco's most popular attractions.
The building itself is remarkable: a monumental structure built into the cliff face, rising 85 metres above sea level, with a striking facade facing the Mediterranean.
What to see
The aquarium
The basement-level aquarium is the undisputed highlight. Over 6,000 specimens from more than 300 species inhabit carefully maintained tanks, including:
- A shark lagoon with blacktip reef sharks and nurse sharks
- Tropical coral reef ecosystems with clownfish, surgeonfish and moray eels
- A Mediterranean tank showcasing local marine life
- A touch pool where children (and adults) can handle starfish and sea urchins
Upper floors
The upper galleries house rotating and permanent exhibitions on ocean exploration, climate change and marine biodiversity. Historical artefacts from Prince Albert I's expeditions are on display, including equipment, specimens and the Prince's own research vessels.
The museum's rooftop terrace offers spectacular views along the coastline.
