Utilities in Monaco
Setting up utilities when you move to Monaco is relatively straightforward. The Principality has dedicated providers for each service, and since there is only one option per utility, you do not need to compare suppliers. Services are generally reliable and of high quality.
Electricity and gas: SMEG
SMEG (Societe Monegasque d'Electricite et de Gaz) is the sole provider of electricity and gas in Monaco.
How to open an account
- Contact SMEG: visit their offices at 10 Avenue de Fontvieille, call, or start the process online at smeg.mc
- Provide documents: your signed lease or property deed, valid identity document and Monaco bank details (RIB)
- Activation: SMEG will arrange to connect or transfer the supply. In most cases, electricity is already connected and just needs to be transferred to your name
Costs
Electricity tariffs in Monaco are set by the government and are broadly comparable to those in France. Bills are typically issued quarterly. SMEG also offers online account management and direct debit payment.
Water: SMA
Water in Monaco is supplied by the Societe Monegasque des Eaux (SMA). In most rental properties, the water supply is already active and costs are included in building charges or billed separately. If you need to set up a new account, contact SMA with your lease and identification.
Tap water in Monaco is safe to drink and of good quality.
Internet, TV and phone: Monaco Telecom
Monaco Telecom is the Principality's telecommunications provider, offering fibre broadband, fixed-line phone, mobile phone plans and television services.
Internet packages
Monaco Telecom offers fibre broadband with speeds up to 1 Gbps or higher. Packages typically include:
- Internet: fibre connection
- TV: digital television with French and international channels
- Fixed phone: landline service included in most packages
How to sign up
Visit a Monaco Telecom shop (Avenue de la Quarantaine or the Metropole Shopping Centre), call, or sign up online at monaco-telecom.mc. You will need your identity documents, proof of address and bank details.
Mobile phone
Monaco Telecom also provides mobile phone plans. Monaco has its own country code (+377), and mobile coverage is excellent throughout the Principality. Roaming agreements with French and European operators mean your phone also works seamlessly across the border.
Practical tips
- Transfer timing: start the process one to two weeks before moving in to avoid any gap in service
- Building manager: in apartment buildings, the syndic or building manager can often help coordinate utility transfers
- Direct debit: set up automatic payments to avoid missed bills
- Monaco uses European standard plugs (types C and E) with 230V, 50Hz power
