Why Look Beyond the Palaces?
Monaco is known for its 5-star palace hotels, but not every visitor needs — or wants — to spend €500+ per night. The Principality does have a handful of more affordable options, and the surrounding French towns of Beausoleil, Cap-d'Ail, and Menton offer genuine budget accommodation within minutes of Monaco by foot or train.
Affordable Hotels Inside Monaco
There are limited options within Monaco itself, but they do exist:
Hôtel de France
A 2-star hotel in La Condamine at 6 Rue de la Turbie, near the market and Port Hercule. One of the most affordable addresses in Monaco, with rates starting around €130–190/night. Rooms are simple but air-conditioned with free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast. Walking distance to the Prince's Palace and the port.
Novotel Monte-Carlo
A 3-star hotel from the Accor chain in central Monte-Carlo. Modern rooms, restaurant and bar on-site. Rates typically €140–280/night depending on season. A reliable mid-range choice.
Columbus Hotel Monte-Carlo
A boutique hotel in Fontvieille near the Princess Grace Rose Garden, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. Heated outdoor pool, on-site restaurant, and a complimentary shuttle within Monaco. Rates from approximately €150/night. More mid-range than budget, but significantly less than the palace hotels.
Beausoleil — Walk to Monaco
Beausoleil sits directly on the Monaco border, on the French side. You can walk into central Monte-Carlo in 5–10 minutes. It is the most practical base for budget visitors.
- Hôtel Olympia — On the Monaco border, rooms from around €80–130/night. Air-conditioned rooms, some with balconies.
- Hôtel Capitole — 3-star, clean and functional. From around €70–120/night.
- Hôtel Forum — About 600 m from Place du Casino. From around €80–130/night.
Beausoleil also has supermarkets and restaurants at French prices, which helps keep overall costs down.
Cap-d'Ail — One Train Stop Away
Cap-d'Ail borders Monaco to the west. The train from Cap-d'Ail to Monaco-Monte-Carlo takes about 5 minutes, and you can also walk in around 15 minutes.
Budget chain hotels and small independent hotels are available here, with rates from approximately €60–120/night. Cap-d'Ail also has its own coastal paths and beaches.
Menton — 12 Minutes by Train
Menton, 10 km east of Monaco, offers a wider selection of budget accommodation. The TER train to Monaco takes about 12 minutes and runs frequently throughout the day.
- ibis budget Menton — Near Menton-Garavan station, from around €60–80/night.
- ibis Styles Menton Centre — Modern, near the station, from around €80–100/night.
Hotels in Menton are generally 40–60% cheaper than equivalent options in Monaco.
Practical Tips
- Book early for summer (June–August) and major events (Grand Prix in early June, Monaco Yacht Show in September). Prices spike and availability drops across the entire Côte d'Azur.
- Train travel is easy: TER trains connect the coast from Nice to Ventimiglia, stopping at Monaco-Monte-Carlo. A single ticket from Menton to Monaco costs a few euros.
- Bus line 100 runs between Nice and Menton via Monaco and is very affordable, though slower than the train.
- Beausoleil is the best option if you want to be on foot — no transport costs and immediate access to Monte-Carlo.
- Monaco itself has no tourist tax, but French towns nearby do (typically €1–2/night).
