schools in Monaco
Monaco follows the French national curriculum across its public schools, from nursery (maternelle) through to upper secondary (lycee). Education is compulsory for children aged 3 to 16 and is free in public schools for all resident families, regardless of nationality.
The Principality's small size means most schools are within walking distance or a short public transport ride from any neighbourhood, and class sizes are generally smaller than in neighbouring France.
School structure
The school system mirrors the French model:
- Maternelle (nursery): ages 3 to 6
- Ecole primaire (primary): ages 6 to 10
- College (lower secondary): ages 11 to 14
- Lycee (upper secondary): ages 15 to 18
At the end of college, students take the brevet exam. Lycee students work towards the baccalaureat, which is the gateway to university studies. Monaco does not have its own university, but residents can access higher education in France and benefit from certain agreements with French universities.
Public and private schools
Monaco has several public schools at each level, all managed by the Direction de l'Education Nationale. Instruction is in French, with English and Italian taught as foreign languages.
Private options also exist, including:
- The International School of Monaco (ISM): offers an English-language, internationally-oriented programme
- FANB (Cours Saint-Maur) and other Catholic schools: follow the French curriculum with a religious ethos
Private school fees vary considerably and places should be sought well in advance.
Enrolment
To enrol your child in a public school, you will need:
- A valid carte de sejour (residence permit)
- Proof of address in Monaco
- The child's birth certificate (translated into French if necessary)
- Vaccination records
- Previous school reports, if applicable
Enrolment is handled through the Direction de l'Education Nationale. It is advisable to begin the process as early as possible, particularly for nursery and primary school, where demand can exceed available places in certain areas.
Practical points
Monaco places emphasis on languages: in addition to French, children typically study English and Italian from primary school onwards. Extracurricular activities are widely available through municipal sports and cultural associations, often at low cost for residents.
