Monaco Red Cross Gala: the Principality’s summer charity ball

Monaco's most formal night of the summer

The Gala de la Croix-Rouge monégasque is the single evening on which Monaco's social calendar, its Princely Family and its oldest charity converge. It is held once a year, on a Saturday in the second half of July, in the Salle des Étoiles of the Sporting Monte-Carlo, and it has been a fixture of the Monegasque summer for more than seventy years — the 2026 edition, on 18 July, was the 77th.

Two things are widely misreported about it, including by travel sites, and both matter if you are planning to attend. The gala raises money for the Croix-Rouge monégasque, Monaco's own national Red Cross society — not for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. And it is a ticketed event, not a closed invitation-only affair: anyone willing to pay the price of a seat can, in principle, book one.

The association behind the evening

The Croix-Rouge monégasque was created on 3 March 1948 by Prince Louis II and recognised the same year by the International Committee of the Red Cross. It is one of the 191 national societies of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and applies its seven fundamental principles: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

Its presidency has stayed within the Princely Family throughout. Prince Rainier III presided from 1949 to 1958, Princess Grace from 1958 to 1982, and H.S.H. Prince Albert II has presided since 17 December 1982 — forty years of presidency were marked in December 2022. Princess Charlène is Vice-President, and both attend the gala.

The association's day-to-day work is the reason the evening exists: social assistance to vulnerable residents, first-aid training and cover, disaster preparedness, and international relief operations. How the evening runs

The format is stable from year to year, and worth knowing before you commit to a seat:

• 19:45 — doors open at the Salle des Étoiles. Guests are received in the hall before dinner.
• Gala dinner — designed by a headline chef and executed by the Sporting Monte-Carlo kitchen and sommellerie teams. In 2026 the menu was signed by triple-Michelin-starred Marcel Ravin, with a dessert by pastry chef Cédric Grolet.
• The tombola — a long-standing tradition, with a small number of high-value prizes drawn during the evening.
• Fireworks — fired from the sea, immediately before the show. This is the moment the Salle des Étoiles opens its roof.
• The show — the headline performance, which changes every year. For 2026 Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer staged the premiere of SOUL! Where legends come back, a production tracing the history of African-American music.
• After-party — the evening continues at Jimmy'z Monte-Carlo, turned over to the gala for the night. Drinks there are not included in the ticket.

A further tradition: each year an artist donates a work to the Croix-Rouge monégasque during the gala. In 2026 the Belgian sculptor Johan Creten gave Éloge de l'Espoir, a hand-modelled ceramic wall piece from his Odore di Femmina series.

Booking and cost

Tables and sponsorship packages are handled directly by the Croix-Rouge monégasque and Monte-Carlo SBM. Prices are set each year and the figure above is the 2026 one; check the current rate before budgeting.

Practical notes for attending

Dress code is enforced. Smoking de rigueur means a dinner jacket, not a dark suit. Monaco's dress code conventions are stricter at the Sporting than almost anywhere else in the Principality, and the gala is the strictest night of all.

Arrive by car or on foot, not by taxi at the last minute. The Sporting sits on avenue Princesse Grace in Larvotto; traffic on gala night is heavy and taxis are scarce in Monaco at the best of times — see getting around Monaco for the alternatives.

July is peak season. If you are travelling in for the evening, book accommodation months ahead; the gala falls in the middle of the busiest weeks of the Monegasque summer.

If you cannot get a seat

The Red Cross Gala is one of two black-tie institutions in the Monegasque year. The other is the Bal de la Rose, held in March — also at the Salle des Étoiles, also in the presence of the Princely Family — in aid of the Fondation Princesse Grace; the 2026 edition, on 21 March, was its 70th.
