Music and the arts in Monaco

For a state of 2.02 km², Monaco supports an unusually dense arts-education offer. One public institution covers music and drama, private teachers fill the gaps, and the national museum runs the visual-arts programming. Residents of any age can start from scratch or keep an existing practice going without leaving the Principality.

The Académie Rainier III

The Académie de Musique et de Théâtre Fondation Prince Rainier III, generally known as the Académie Rainier III, is Monaco's public arts-education establishment. Run by the Mairie de Monaco, it takes over 800 pupils with a teaching team of around 60, based at 1 boulevard Albert 1er. Despite the "conservatoire" label often attached to it informally, its teaching is not limited to music: it also covers dramatic art and violin-making.

• Piano – beginner through to advanced classes
• Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass
• Woodwind – flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone
• Brass – trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba
• Percussion – classical and contemporary
• Voice – classical, operatic and ensemble singing
• Composition and music writing
• Musicianship (theory, harmony, music history)
• Chamber music and orchestra
• Jazz and Amplified Contemporary Music (MAA)
• Dramatic art – theatre training open from age 10
• Lutherie – introduction to bow-instrument making

How teaching is organised

The school year runs September to June. Pupils get:

• Weekly individual lessons (30 to 60 minutes)
• Group musicianship classes
• Ensemble and orchestra rehearsals
• Auditions and public concerts

Admission is by application, with a placement test for non-beginner classes. Introductory courses start from age 5–6.

Practical details

Applications are made online through the Academy's website. Fees vary according to the pupil's ties to the Principality and are published by the establishment. The Academy operates across three sites: La Condamine for music, Fontvieille for the Jazz and MAA department, and Monaco-Ville for dramatic art. Private tuition

For more flexibility, a number of professional musicians and teachers give one-to-one lessons in Monaco, either at home or in a private studio. Piano, guitar, voice and violin are the most requested.

Indicative rates (per hour):

• Student or advanced amateur: €30–50
• Professional or qualified teacher: €60–100
• Specialist instrument (harp, organ): €80–120

Monthly packages of four to eight lessons are common and usually come at a slight discount on the single-lesson rate.

Visual and fine arts

The NMNM – Nouveau Musée National de Monaco

The Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM) is the Principality's main public institution for the visual arts, spread across two historic villas:

• Villa Sauber (avenue Princesse Grace) – permanent and temporary exhibitions
• Villa Paloma (boulevard du Jardin Exotique) – contemporary art and design

Private studios and workshops

Monaco and the neighbouring communes host artists and teachers offering small-group or individual classes in:

• Drawing and painting (watercolour, oil, acrylic)
• Sculpture and ceramics
• Fine-art photography
• Illustration and graphic design

Indicative rates: €40–80 for a two- to three-hour session.

Dance and performing arts

The Académie Rainier III does not teach dance. Dance in Monaco is handled by associations and private studios: Le Studio de Monaco (contemporary and flamenco) and the Danse Sportive section of AS Monaco Omnisports cover recreational practice, while the Académie Princesse Grace, attached to Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, provides audition-only professional training. Young residents have a wide choice of artistic activity:

• Académie Rainier III: introductory cycle from age 5 through to pre-professional classes; drama from age 10
• Private teachers: weekday or weekend lessons
• NMNM workshops: creative work and an introduction to contemporary art
• School choirs and music-making in the Principality's state schools
• Summer courses in music, visual arts and dance
