Running Events & Marathons in Monaco

Overview

Monaco has no marathon of its own — at 2.02 km² there simply isn't room for a 42.195 km loop — but the Principality punches well above its size as a running destination. A mild Mediterranean climate allows training almost year-round, the world's elite gather here each July for one of athletics' premier meetings, and two hugely popular mass-participation events bring thousands of amateur runners onto the quays. Add the flat-and-fast Nice-Cannes marathon just along the coast, and Monaco makes an excellent base for runners of every level.

Elite athletics: Herculis

The Herculis EBS meeting is a one-day stop on the Wanda Diamond League circuit, held each July at the Stade Louis II. It is a track-and-field event, not a road race: expect world-class sprints, middle-distance races (the mile and 1500m have produced world records here), hurdles, jumps and throws rather than a marathon. It regularly draws Olympic and world champions and is one of the highlights of the Monaco sporting summer.

Mass-participation races

Two events open the roads to everyday runners:

• The Monaco Run (February) — the Principality's main running weekend, organised by the Fédération Monégasque d'Athlétisme. The 5 km around Port Hercule carries a World Athletics label and is reputed one of the fastest in the world; the programme also includes a 10 km, city and mountain trails, a kids' run and a charity walk.
• No Finish Line (November) — an eight-day charity relay at Port Hercule where participants walk or run continuously, day and night, to raise money for children's causes. You cover as many kilometres as you like at your own pace, and every kilometre is converted into a donation.

The nearest full marathon

The Marathon des Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes is the region's big 42.195 km event, run in early November (8 November in 2026). The course starts on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice and finishes on the Boulevard de la Croisette in Cannes, hugging the coast almost the whole way — flat, fast and scenic. It is the second-largest marathon in France after Paris and a natural goal race for Monaco-based runners. Nice is roughly a 30-minute train ride or drive from the Principality; Cannes about an hour.

Training routes

Monaco itself is compact and hilly, which shapes where people run:

• Port Hercule quays — the flat perimeter of the harbour is the go-to loop for easy runs, intervals and tempo work. It is short (a little over 2 km), well surfaced and lit into the evening.
• Larvotto & Grimaldi Forum seafront — a flat, pleasant waterfront stretch on the eastern side of the Principality, good for recovery jogs.
• Coastal paths towards Cap-d'Ail — heading west, the seaside footpaths and the Sentier du Littoral offer longer, rolling runs with sea views.
• The corniches — the roads climbing above Monaco (towards Tête de Chien and the Moyenne Corniche) rise several hundred metres in a short distance, making them a demanding hill and elevation workout rewarded by panoramic views.

Terrain, climate and clubs

The steep terrain is a genuine training asset: short, sharp climbs build leg strength and aerobic capacity that flatter cities can't offer. The Mediterranean climate is mild and runnable in every season, though July and August heat calls for early-morning starts and careful hydration. Monaco's running community is small but active, centred on the Fédération Monégasque d'Athlétisme (athletisme.mc), which organises training and fields teams across track, road and trail; clubs generally welcome visiting runners looking to join a group session.
