Sailing and Regattas in Monaco: Yacht Club and Events
Guide to sailing in Monaco — the Yacht Club de Monaco, major regattas, Monaco Classic Week, the Primo Cup, sailing school, and membership information.

Monaco and the Sea
Monaco's identity is inseparable from the Mediterranean. With Port Hercules at its heart and a coastline that has attracted seafarers for centuries, the Principality is one of the world's great yachting capitals. Sailing, regattas, and maritime culture are central to Monaco's sporting life, anchored by the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco.
Yacht Club de Monaco
Overview
The Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) was founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier III and is currently presided over by Prince Albert II. It is one of the most exclusive yacht clubs in the world, with a membership that includes prominent figures from international sailing, business, and royalty.
The club's striking modern clubhouse, designed by the renowned architect Lord Norman Foster, was inaugurated in 2014. The building sits on the quayside of Port Hercules, its sleek design echoing the prow of a ship. It houses restaurants, event spaces, a maritime library, and a sailing school.
Membership
Membership of the YCM is by invitation and sponsorship. Prospective members must be proposed by two existing members and approved by the club's committee. Annual membership fees are significant, reflecting the club's exclusive standing. The club has approximately 2,500 members from over 70 countries.
Facilities
- Clubhouse: Multi-level building with panoramic views of the harbour
- Restaurants: Including the members-only restaurant and a more casual terrace
- Marina: Berths in Port Hercules for members' vessels

Major Regattas and Events
Monaco Classic Week
Held biennially (every two years, typically in September), Monaco Classic Week celebrates the heritage of classic yachting. The event brings together vintage sailing yachts and classic motor yachts for a week of racing, parades, and exhibitions in Port Hercules and the surrounding waters. It is considered one of the finest gatherings of classic vessels in the Mediterranean.
Primo Cup — Trophée Credit Suisse
The Primo Cup is one of the most popular regattas in Monaco, held annually in late January or February. It attracts around 50 boats across several classes (including J/70 and Smeralda 888) for three days of competitive racing in the bay of Monaco. Open to amateur and semi-professional crews, it is a highlight of the winter sailing calendar.
Monaco Globe Series
Part of the qualifying process for major offshore races, the Monaco Globe Series is organised by the YCM and brings solo and double-handed sailors to Monaco for events connected to the broader world of ocean racing.
Monaco Yacht Show
While not a regatta, the Monaco Yacht Show (held each September in Port Hercules) is one of the world's most important superyacht exhibitions. Over four days, the show displays approximately 120 superyachts — many making their world debut — alongside tenders, accessories, and maritime technology. Attendance is approximately 30,000 visitors, including industry professionals and prospective buyers.
- Tickets: Available for public days (typically Thursday through Saturday), with prices starting around 70 euros for a day pass
- VIP access: Premium packages available with lounge access and guided tours
- Location: Quai Antoine 1er, Port Hercules
Other Sailing Events
- Monaco Sportsboat Winter Series: Racing from November to March in the bay
- Palermo–Monaco offshore race: A classic Mediterranean offshore event
- Monaco Swan One Design: Annual regatta for Swan-class yachts
Sailing School
The YCM's sailing school, known as the Sports Section, offers courses for children and adults of all levels. Programmes include:
- Optimist dinghies: For children aged 7–15, with courses running during school holidays and on Wednesdays/Saturdays during the school year
- Laser and catamaran classes: For teenagers and adults
- Keelboat sailing: Introduction and advanced courses
- Race training: For competitive sailors preparing for regattas
Registration is open to both YCM members and non-members, though members receive priority. Fees vary by programme; a typical children's weekly course costs approximately 200–300 euros.
Spectating
Many of Monaco's regattas can be watched for free from the harbour walls, the Fontvieille promenade, or the palace area above Port Hercules. For the Monaco Yacht Show, tickets are required. During events like Monaco Classic Week, the vintage yachts are often accessible for viewing dockside.
