While Monaco is small enough to walk across in under an hour, taxis are useful for airport transfers, evening outings, carrying luggage or when the hillside terrain is too much. Monaco has an official taxi service with regulated fares and several convenient alternatives.

You can pick up a taxi at designated ranks, including:
- Casino Square (Place du Casino)
- Monaco-Monte-Carlo train station
- Port Hercule (near the Yacht Club)
- Metropole Shopping Centre
- Fontvieille Shopping Centre

Fares
Taxis use meters. Typical rates:
- Starting fare: approximately 3.40 EUR
- Per kilometre: approximately 2 EUR (daytime), higher at night
- Minimum fare: applies for very short trips
- Supplements: for luggage, night-time (19:00-07:00), Sundays and public holidays
A trip within Monaco rarely exceeds 20 EUR. Trips to Nice airport typically cost 90 to 120 EUR.
Ride-hailing apps
Uber does not operate in Monaco. However, there are alternatives:
- Uber from Nice: you can take an Uber to Monaco when starting from Nice or the airport, but you cannot hail one from within Monaco
- Private car services: several premium chauffeur services operate in Monaco (such as Blacklane or local providers), bookable in advance
Other transport options
Monaco offers several alternatives to taxis:
CAM buses
Free and frequent, covering all neighbourhoods. See our public transport guide.
Public lifts and escalators
Over 35 free public lifts and escalators connect different levels of the city, reducing the need for taxis on the hillside.
Electric scooters and bicycles
Monaco has a bike-sharing scheme (MonaBike) with electric bicycles available at stations around the Principality. Electric scooters from operators are also available.
Car hire
Car rental agencies are available in Monaco, though driving and parking in such a compact city is rarely necessary for short stays.
Tips
- Always use official taxis or pre-booked services; avoid unlicensed drivers
- Ask for a receipt (recu) if needed for expenses
- Traffic during events (Grand Prix, Yacht Show) can make journeys longer; plan ahead
- For Nice airport, booking a taxi in advance is recommended, especially for early morning flights
