Overview

Monaco packs an extraordinary concentration of luxury retail into just 2 square kilometres. From flagship boutiques of the world's top fashion houses to a traditional covered market selling local produce, the Principality offers shopping experiences that range from ultra-premium to pleasantly everyday. This guide covers the main shopping districts and what you will find in each.

Carré d'Or

The Carré d'Or ("Golden Square") is Monaco's premier luxury shopping district, centred around Avenue des Beaux-Arts, Avenue de Monte-Carlo, and the streets radiating from Place du Casino. This is where the world's most prestigious fashion houses maintain their Monaco flagships.

Brands present include Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Hermès, Cartier, Bulgari, Prada, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Valentino, Fendi, Céline, and many more. Jewellers such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Chopard, and Graff are also represented. The Carré d'Or is walkable in under 15 minutes end to end, making it one of the most dense luxury shopping areas in Europe.

Location: Between Place du Casino and Boulevard des Moulins.

One Monte-Carlo

One Monte-Carlo is a modern luxury retail and lifestyle complex opened in 2019, located between the Hôtel de Paris and the Casino. The development features a curated selection of high-end boutiques, fine dining restaurants, and a landscaped public plaza with views of the Casino gardens.

Tenants include Chanel, Fendi, Celine, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and a selection of upscale lifestyle and beauty brands. One Monte-Carlo represents the most recent major retail development in the Principality and reflects a contemporary approach to luxury shopping.

Location: Place du Casino / Avenue de la Costa.

Métropole Shopping Monte-Carlo

Located on Avenue de la Madone near the Hôtel Métropole, the Métropole Shopping centre is a multi-level retail destination offering a mix of luxury fashion, contemporary brands, and lifestyle stores. The centre features approximately 80 boutiques across several floors, including fashion, accessories, beauty, and homeware.

Key tenants include Karl Lagerfeld, Sandro, Maje, Claudie Pierlot, and a selection of independent fashion and jewellery boutiques. The ground floor opens onto a pleasant pedestrian area with cafés. The centre is climate-controlled and accessible via public lifts from Avenue de la Madone.

Location: 17 Avenue des Spélugues, 98000 Monaco.

Boulevard des Moulins

Boulevard des Moulins is a commercial street running through Monte-Carlo that serves as a transition between the ultra-luxury of the Carré d'Or and more accessible mid-range shopping. Here you will find international chains (Zara, H&M), pharmacies, opticians, banks, and everyday retail alongside some independent boutiques. It is where many residents do their regular shopping.

Location: Runs from Rue Grimaldi toward Place du Casino.

Fontvieille Shopping Centre

The Centre Commercial de Fontvieille is Monaco's most practical shopping destination, located in the Fontvieille district near the Stade Louis II. The centre houses a Carrefour supermarket, a selection of mid-range fashion and household stores, a cinema, and various service providers. It is the go-to destination for everyday shopping needs and is particularly popular with residents and families.

Location: Avenue Prince Héréditaire Albert, Fontvieille.

La Condamine Market

The Marché de la Condamine is a covered food market on Place d'Armes, open every morning. It sells fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, charcuterie, flowers, olives, and prepared Mediterranean dishes. Several small restaurants and food stalls operate within the market hall, making it a popular spot for a casual lunch. The market is one of the most authentic everyday experiences in Monaco.

Location: Place d'Armes, La Condamine. Open daily mornings (except Monday afternoons).

Practical Tips

  • Opening hours: Most boutiques open 10:00–19:00 Monday to Saturday. Some close for lunch (12:30–14:00). Sunday closures are common, though One Monte-Carlo and some Carré d'Or boutiques may open on Sundays during peak season.
  • Tax-free shopping: Monaco has no VAT (TVA), which makes prices competitive compared to neighbouring France for many luxury goods.
  • Getting around: Public lifts and escalators connect different levels of the city. The walk from Fontvieille to the Carré d'Or takes approximately 20 minutes.
  • Personal shopping: Many luxury boutiques offer private shopping appointments. Contact individual stores directly.
