Schools across the Principality

Monaco operates a well-funded education system with public, private and international schools covering all ages from nursery (maternelle) through to secondary (lycee). Instruction in public schools is in French and follows the French national curriculum, adapted with Monegasque history and language.

Public schools

Nursery and primary (maternelle and primaire)

Monaco has several public nursery and primary schools distributed across neighbourhoods:

  • Ecole de la Condamine -- La Condamine
  • Ecole de Fontvieille -- Fontvieille
  • Ecole des Revoires -- Moneghetti
  • Ecole du Parc -- La Rousse / Saint-Roman
  • Ecole de Monaco-Ville -- Monaco-Ville (the Rock)

Each school serves its surrounding catchment area. Class sizes are typically small by European standards.

Secondary (college and lycee)

  • College Charles III -- the main public lower secondary school, centrally located
  • Lycee Albert 1er -- the public upper secondary school offering the French baccalaureat and technical programmes
  • Lycee Technique et Hotelier de Monaco (LTHM) -- vocational and hospitality education

Private schools

  • Institution Francois d'Assise - Nicolas Barre (FANB) -- a Catholic school offering nursery through secondary. It is the largest private school in Monaco.
  • Ecole des Soeurs Dominicaines -- a smaller private nursery and primary school

International schools

  • International School of Monaco (ISM) -- offers an English-language international curriculum from nursery to secondary level. Popular with expatriate and multilingual families. Located in Fontvieille.

Higher education

Monaco does not have a full university, but the International University of Monaco (IUM) offers business and management degrees. Most students pursuing higher education attend universities in nearby Nice, Aix-en-Provence or further afield in France.

How to enrol

For public schools, the Direction de l'Education Nationale handles enrolment. You will typically need proof of residence in Monaco, your child's birth certificate, vaccination records and previous school reports. For private and international schools, apply directly to the institution -- waiting lists may apply, especially at ISM.
