The feast of Sainte Devote
Sainte Devote is the patron saint of Monaco and of the Grimaldi family. Her feast day on January 27 is one of the most cherished traditions in the Principality, blending religious devotion with community celebration.
The legend
According to tradition, Devote was a young Christian woman martyred in Corsica during the 4th century. Her body was placed on a boat headed for Africa, but a divine storm redirected the vessel to the coast of Monaco, at the Vallon des Gaumates. A chapel was later built on the spot where she came ashore, and it became a place of pilgrimage.
The boat burning (January 26)
The celebrations begin on the evening of January 26 with the symbolic burning of a boat on the quay near the Sainte-Devote Church. The Prince lights the pyre in a ceremony attended by residents, officials and visitors. Fireworks follow the burning. This tradition recalls the legend that fishermen once tried to steal the saint's relics and their boat was intercepted and set ablaze.
Procession and mass (January 27)
On the morning of January 27, a solemn procession carries the relics of Sainte Devote through the streets of Monaco to the Cathedral. A pontifical mass is celebrated in the presence of the princely family. It is one of the rare occasions when Monaco's deep Catholic heritage is publicly displayed.
