About the Festival

The Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo is one of Europe's most respected spring music festivals. Founded in 1984 under the patronage of Princess Caroline of Monaco (now Princess of Hanover), who continues to serve as its president, the festival has established a distinctive identity by combining great classical repertoire with ambitious contemporary programming.

Since 2012, artistic director Marc Monnet has guided the festival toward a bold blend of historical masterworks and new commissions from living composers. Each edition premieres new works, giving the Printemps des Arts a strong reputation in the international contemporary music scene.

Programme

The festival presents around 30 to 40 events over approximately four weeks. Performances span:

  • Orchestral concerts featuring international ensembles and soloists
  • Chamber music recitals in intimate settings
  • Contemporary music premieres and commissions
  • Opera and vocal performances
  • Cross-disciplinary events combining music with dance, visual art or film

Past editions have featured the London Symphony Orchestra, soloists from the Berliner Philharmoniker, and renowned artists such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Patricia Kopatchinskaja.

Venues

Performances take place across several of Monaco's most atmospheric spaces:

  • Auditorium Rainier III — the principal concert hall
  • Opéra de Monte-Carlo (Salle Garnier) — the historic opera house at the Casino
  • Musée Océanographique — concerts in the stunning museum setting
  • Cathédrale de Monaco — sacred music in the cathedral on the Rock
  • Various other cultural and architectural spaces throughout the Principality

Tickets

Tickets are available through the official website at printempsdesarts.mc. Prices vary by event and venue. Some performances are free. Subscriptions and multi-concert passes may also be offered.

Booking opens well in advance of the festival. Popular concerts with headline soloists and orchestras tend to sell out.

Practical Tips

  • The festival coincides with pleasant spring weather, making it an ideal time to visit Monaco
  • Plan your schedule early — the full programme is published on the official website several weeks before opening night
  • Some venues, such as the Cathédrale and the Musée Océanographique, are attractions in their own right
  • The variety of venues means performances take place across different districts; allow travel time between events
  • Smart-casual dress is appropriate for most concerts; evening wear is suitable for gala events in the Salle Garnier
