Pets in Monaco

Monaco is a pet-friendly place, and you will see plenty of dogs enjoying walks along the port and through the parks. However, there are specific rules around registration, leashing and waste that all pet owners need to follow.

Bringing a pet to Monaco

If you are moving to Monaco with a pet from another country, you must comply with EU pet travel regulations:

From an EU country

• Microchip: your pet must be microchipped (ISO standard)
• Rabies vaccination: current and administered at least 21 days before travel
• EU pet passport: issued by an authorised veterinarian in your country of origin
• Tapeworm treatment: required for dogs entering from certain countries (check current rules)

From a non-EU country

• All of the above, plus:
• A blood titre test for rabies antibodies may be required, depending on the country of origin
• A health certificate from an official veterinarian

Dog registration

All dogs in Monaco must be registered with the Mairie (town hall). You will need:

• Proof of microchip identification
• Vaccination records (carnet de vaccination)
• Your identity documents and proof of residence in Monaco
• For certain breeds classified as dangerous dogs, additional declarations and insurance may be required

Rules for dogs in public

Monaco enforces clear rules for dogs in public spaces:

• Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times in public areas
• Owners must pick up after their dogs; bag dispensers and bins are provided in many locations
• Dogs are generally not allowed on Larvotto Beach during the summer season
• Some restaurants allow dogs on terraces; check before sitting down
• Dogs are permitted in most parks if leashed

Fines can be issued for not picking up after your dog or for allowing dogs off-lead where prohibited.

Monaco has several veterinary clinics within the Principality, and many more in the neighbouring French towns of Beausoleil, Cap d'Ail and Menton. Services include:
