Monaco's National Day

The Fete Nationale on November 19 is the most important public holiday in the Principality. It celebrates the reigning sovereign and Monaco's identity as an independent nation.

The day's events

Morning: the Te Deum

The celebrations begin with a solemn Te Deum mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate (Cathedrale de Monaco) on the Rock. The Prince, the princely family, government officials and dignitaries attend this religious service of thanksgiving.

Military parade

After the mass, a military parade takes place on the Palace Square (Place du Palais). Monaco's Carabiniers du Prince and the Fire Brigade perform a formal review before the sovereign. Foreign diplomats and residents line the square.

Afternoon: public celebrations

The rest of the day is devoted to public festivities:

  • Flag displays: Monegasque red and white flags adorn buildings across the Principality
  • Concerts and performances in various public spaces
  • Receptions hosted by the Prince at the Palace

Evening: fireworks

The day closes with a spectacular fireworks display over Port Hercule, visible from many points across Monaco.

A distinctly Monegasque tradition

Unlike most countries where the national day is fixed by constitution, Monaco's sovereign personally selects the date. Prince Rainier III celebrated it on November 19 as well, reinforcing the tradition. The day reflects the close bond between the Monegasque people and the Grimaldi dynasty that has ruled since 1297.

Practical tips

  • Expect road closures around the Rock and Palace Square from early morning
  • Public transport runs on a holiday schedule
  • The fireworks at Port Hercule are free and open to all
