Overview

Despite its small size, Monaco is home to a remarkable collection of museums and cultural institutions. From world-class marine science to princely art collections, the Principality's museums reflect its rich history, its ruling family's patronage, and its commitment to the arts and sciences. Most museums are accessible on foot or by public bus within the Principality.

Major Museums

Musée Océanographique de Monaco

Founded in 1889 by Prince Albert I, the Oceanographic Museum is Monaco's most visited cultural institution and one of the oldest marine science museums in the world. The building itself — a monumental structure built into the cliffside of the Rock — is as impressive as its collections.

The museum houses aquariums with thousands of marine species, including sharks, tropical fish, coral reef ecosystems, and Mediterranean fauna. The upper floors contain historical collections of marine exploration instruments, whale skeletons, and specimens from Prince Albert I's oceanographic expeditions. The rooftop terrace offers panoramic views of the coastline.

Palais Princier (Prince's Palace)

The official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, the Palais Princier opens its state apartments to visitors during the summer months. The Grand Apartments feature Renaissance frescoes, period furniture, the Throne Room, and the Palatine Chapel. The changing of the guard takes place daily at 11:55 on the palace square and is free to watch.

  • Location: Place du Palais, Monaco-Ville
  • Open: Typically April–October

Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM)

Monaco's national museum of contemporary art operates across two venues: Villa Paloma (near the Exotic Garden) and Villa Sauber (near Larvotto). The NMNM organises temporary exhibitions focused on contemporary art, design, and the relationship between art and the Principality's cultural heritage. Exhibitions rotate throughout the year.

  • Location: Villa Paloma, 56 Boulevard du Jardin Exotique / Villa Sauber, 17 Avenue Princesse Grace

Jardin Exotique and Prehistoric Anthropology Museum

The Exotic Garden perches on the western cliff of Monaco and contains one of the world's most important collections of succulent plants and cacti — over 1,000 varieties. A visit includes access to the underground limestone cave (Grotte de l'Observatoire) with stalactites and stalagmites, as well as the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology, which displays archaeological finds from the region including tools, bones, and burial remains dating back hundreds of thousands of years.

Musée des Timbres et des Monnaies

This museum traces the history of Monegasque postage stamps (from 1885) and coinage. It houses rare philatelic collections, engraved printing plates, historical currency, and temporary exhibitions on numismatic themes. Located in Fontvieille, it is a specialised but well-presented museum that appeals to collectors and those interested in Monaco's postal and monetary history.

  • Location: Fontvieille, Terrasses de Fontvieille

Collection de Voitures Anciennes

The Prince of Monaco's private collection of classic and vintage cars is displayed in a dedicated exhibition space in Fontvieille. The collection features approximately 100 vehicles spanning from the early 1900s to modern-day Formula 1 cars, including rare pre-war models and ceremonial vehicles used by the princely family.

  • Location: Terrasses de Fontvieille
