The Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most iconic races on the Formula 1 calendar and the Principality's most famous event. Organised since 1929 by the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM), it takes place each year on a street circuit through the streets of Monaco.

The circuit

The Monaco circuit covers 3.337 km through the Monte-Carlo, La Condamine and port districts. Famous sections include:

  • Sainte-Dévote: first corner after the start
  • Casino: climb to the Casino square
  • Tunnel: under the Fairmont hotel
  • Harbour chicane: tight turn facing the port
  • La Rascasse: penultimate corner, party atmosphere
  • Swimming Pool: passage near the Stade Nautique

Getting there

During the Grand Prix, many streets in Monaco are closed to traffic. The train is the most reliable way to reach Monaco during the event.

  • Train: Monaco station is within walking distance of the circuit
  • Helicopter: service maintained from Nice
  • Bus: service disrupted, routes modified
  • Car: strongly discouraged (road closures, limited parking)

Tickets and grandstands

Tickets are available through the official F1 website and the ACM. Options include:

  • Grandstands: seated areas with circuit views (prices vary by location)
  • Building terraces: private rentals along the circuit
  • Hospitality: VIP packages with paddock access

The most popular grandstands are those overlooking the port, Casino, and Swimming Pool sections.

Accommodation

Monaco hotels sell out well in advance during the Grand Prix. Alternatives:

  • Beausoleil: French town adjacent to Monaco, walkable
  • Cap-d'Ail: a few minutes by train
  • Menton / Nice: accessible in 10-20 minutes by train

Practical tips

  • Arrive early in the morning to soak up the atmosphere
  • Wear comfortable shoes (lots of walking, hills)
  • Sun protection and water — grandstands are in full sun
  • Noise is intense — earplugs can be useful
  • Book restaurants around the port well in advance
