Monaco's environmental commitment

Despite being one of the smallest countries in the world, Monaco has positioned itself as an ambitious voice on environmental issues. Driven by the personal commitment of Prince Albert II, the Principality pursues aggressive climate targets and invests heavily in ocean conservation, green mobility and sustainable urban development.

Climate and energy targets

Monaco's national Energy Transition Pact sets clear goals:

  • Carbon neutrality by 2050
  • 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels)
  • Expansion of renewable energy, including solar panels on public buildings and seawater heat pumps for heating and cooling

The government incentivises energy-efficient renovation of buildings and requires new construction to meet high environmental standards such as HQE and BREEAM certification.

Ocean conservation

Given its Mediterranean coastline, Monaco places ocean health at the centre of its environmental agenda:

  • Larvotto Marine Reserve: a protected area off Larvotto Beach that supports seagrass meadows, fish populations and marine biodiversity
  • Oceanographic Institute: the famed Oceanographic Museum, founded by Prince Albert I, continues to carry out research and public education on marine science
  • Plastic bans: Monaco has progressively banned single-use plastic bags, straws and other items
  • International engagement: the Principality participates in ACCOBAMS (cetacean protection) and the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean marine mammals

The Prince Albert II Foundation

Established in 2006, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is the Principality's flagship environmental organisation. It funds projects in three priority areas: climate change, biodiversity and water resources. The foundation has supported over 700 projects across more than 70 countries, from polar research expeditions to coral reef restoration.

Green mobility

Monaco is gradually greening its transport network:

  • Electric buses: the CAM public bus fleet is transitioning to fully electric vehicles
  • Electric car incentives: subsidies for purchasing electric and hybrid vehicles
  • Bateau Bus: the free solar-powered harbour shuttle
  • Public lifts and escalators: reducing the need for car travel within the hilly Principality
  • Cycling: development of shared e-bike stations and dedicated paths

Waste and recycling

Monaco operates a comprehensive waste sorting and recycling system, with colour-coded bins across the Principality. The government has set ambitious targets for reducing landfill waste and increasing recycling rates. Organic waste collection is being expanded progressively.

What residents can do

Residents are encouraged to participate in environmental efforts by sorting waste properly, using public transport, taking advantage of energy renovation subsidies and supporting local conservation initiatives. The government regularly publishes guides and organises awareness campaigns.
