Christmas in Monaco
Monaco embraces the festive season with sparkling lights, markets and family entertainment. From early December through to the first days of January, the Principality transforms into a winter wonderland along the Mediterranean.
The Christmas Village
The centrepiece of the celebrations is the Village de Noel at Port Hercule. This open-air festive market features dozens of wooden chalets selling crafts, gifts, regional produce and seasonal treats like mulled wine, roasted chestnuts and crepes.
The village also includes:
- An ice skating rink: open daily for sessions throughout the holiday period (small fee applies)
- Fairground rides: a carousel, small train and other attractions for young children
- A giant Christmas tree: the harbour's decorated tree has become a symbol of the season in Monaco
- Live entertainment: carol singers, bands and performers appear on a small stage throughout December
Festive lights
The streets of Monte-Carlo, the Condamine and Monaco-Ville are illuminated with elaborate Christmas decorations. The Casino Square and the Avenue de la Costa are particularly impressive, with thousands of lights draped across trees and buildings. The displays are switched on in late November and remain through early January.
Events and traditions
Several special events mark the holiday period:
- Santa Claus visits: organised by the Mairie for local children
- Christmas concerts: held in the Cathedral, the Auditorium Rainier III and other venues
- New Year's Eve celebrations: the Principality typically hosts a public fireworks display over Port Hercule at midnight on December 31
The Fete de la Saint-Sylvestre (New Year's Eve) draws large crowds to the harbour area.
Practical tips
The Christmas Village is free to enter and open every day, usually from late morning until evening. Weekends are the busiest. It is easily accessible on foot from the train station or by bus. Parking at the Quai Antoine Ier car park is the closest option for drivers.
