About the Casino de Monte-Carlo de Monte-Carlo

The Casino de Monte-Carlo is one of the most famous gambling establishments in the world and a defining landmark of Monaco. Designed by architect Charles Garnier (who also designed the Paris Opera), it opened in 1863 and has been central to Monte-Carlo's identity ever since.

Even if you have no interest in gambling, the building itself is worth visiting for its stunning Belle Epoque architecture, frescoed ceilings and gilded interiors.

Visiting the Casino

The Casino is located on Place du Casino, the grand square at the heart of Monte-Carlo. The atrium and lobby are free to enter. To access the gaming rooms, you will need to pay an entry fee starting at around 17 EUR and present valid photo identification.

Opening hours vary by section. The main gaming rooms typically open at 14:00 and the slot machines area (Salle Renaissance) from 10:00. Private salons operate on their own schedules. Check the SBM website for current hours before visiting.

Dress code

The Casino enforces a dress code, particularly from 14:00 onwards. Smart attire is required in the gaming rooms. Expect the following rules:

  • Long trousers and closed shoes for men (no jeans in some salons)
  • No sportswear, shorts, flip-flops, trainers or baseball caps
  • Smart casual is generally accepted during morning hours in the slot areas
  • Evening visits to the private salons call for more formal dress

Gaming rooms

The Casino offers several distinct spaces:

  • Salle Renaissance: slot machines and electronic games, open from 10:00
  • Salle Europe: classic table games including roulette and blackjack
  • Salons Prives: exclusive high-stakes rooms with stricter entry requirements

Minimum bets vary by room and table. European roulette typically starts from 5 EUR in the main rooms.

Practical tips

  • You must be at least 18 and carry valid ID (passport or national identity card)
  • Monaco residents and Monegasque nationals are not permitted to gamble
  • The Casino Square area is beautiful at night and worth visiting even if you do not enter
  • Several restaurants and the Opera de Monte-Carlo are located within the same complex
  • Photography is generally not allowed inside the gaming rooms
