Port Hercule
Historic deep-water harbour at the heart of Monaco, hosting mega-yachts, the Formula 1 Grand Prix pit lane, and the annual Monaco Yacht Show

Overview
Port Hercule is Monaco's only deep-water port and one of the most iconic harbours on the Mediterranean. Nestled between the Rock of Monaco-Ville and the Monte-Carlo district, this 16-hectare basin has served as a maritime hub since antiquity. Today it accommodates around 700 berths, including capacity for superyachts exceeding 100 metres in length, and serves as a backdrop for several of Monaco's most prestigious annual events.
History
The harbour's origins trace back to the 6th century BC, when Phocaean Greeks from Massalia founded the colony of Monoikos on this natural deep-water inlet — its name derived from the mythological association with Hercules. Julius Caesar reportedly anchored here in 50 BC. The port saw its first modern transformation under Prince Albert I, who commissioned two 170-metre breakwaters beginning in 1901. A major expansion in 2002 added a counter-jetty and floating breakwater, significantly increasing capacity and protection.
Major Events
Port Hercule serves as the dramatic centrepiece for some of Monaco's highest-profile events:
Formula 1 Grand Prix: The Monaco Grand Prix circuit runs directly along the port's quaysides, with temporary pit facilities and grandstands erected on the harbour each May. Yachts moored in the port offer exclusive trackside viewing.
Monaco Yacht Show: Held every September, this is the world's premier superyacht exhibition. Over 120 superyachts are displayed in-water, drawing more than 500 exhibitors and thousands of industry professionals and collectors.
Other Events: The port hosts numerous regattas, luxury lifestyle events, and temporary hospitality venues throughout the year.
