Japanese Garden
Tranquil 7,000 m2 Japanese garden on the seafront, designed by Yasuo Beppu and featuring a Zen garden, tea house, and koi pond
Overview
The Japanese Garden of Monaco is a meticulously crafted 7,000-square-metre landscape situated along the seafront near the Larvotto district. Designed by the Japanese landscape architect Yasuo Beppu and inaugurated in 1994, the garden follows the principles of Zen philosophy, creating an island of tranquility amid the urban density of the principality.
Design and Philosophy
Yasuo Beppu designed the garden in accordance with traditional Japanese landscaping principles, emphasizing harmony between natural elements -- stone, water, and vegetation. The garden was conceived as a space for contemplation and meditation, drawing on the aesthetics of the Muromachi period. Every element is deliberately placed to evoke a sense of natural balance, from the arrangement of boulders to the curvature of pathways.
Key Features
Zen Garden: A dry landscape garden composed of raked gravel and carefully positioned stones represents the essence of Zen contemplation. The patterns in the gravel symbolize water ripples.
Tea House: An authentic Japanese tea house stands within the garden, constructed using traditional materials and techniques. It serves as both a visual focal point and a space for quiet reflection.
Koi Pond: A large pond populated with ornamental koi fish forms the garden's central water feature. Bridges and stepping stones allow visitors to cross the pond and observe the fish from different vantage points.
Waterfall and Stream: A cascading waterfall feeds a winding stream that passes through the garden, providing the gentle sound of running water throughout the space.
Vegetation: The garden features a mix of Mediterranean and Asian plant species, including olive trees, Japanese maples, bamboo, and azaleas, all carefully maintained to reflect the seasonal changes valued in Japanese garden design.
