Jardin Animalier
Monaco's zoological garden founded by Prince Rainier III, home to around 250 rescued animals on the southern slope of the Rock

Overview
The Jardin Animalier de Monaco is a one-hectare zoological garden set across four terraced levels on the southern slope of the Rock of Monaco, overlooking the sea. Founded on 25 December 1954 by Prince Rainier III, who brought back approximately 30 injured animals from a trip to Africa, the zoo has grown to house around 250 animals of some 60 species. It is administered by the Prince's Palace.
Important: Closed in 2026
The Jardin Animalier is closed for the entirety of 2026 for cliff safety consolidation works and a major modernisation project ordered by Prince Albert II. This represents the most ambitious transformation since the garden's creation, with the aim of updating facilities to modern animal welfare standards. Normal visiting is expected to resume in 2027.
Animal Collection
A distinguishing feature of this zoo is that no animal has ever been purchased. Every resident was either donated, rescued from circuses, adopted as an abandoned animal, or seized by customs authorities. The collection includes:
- Primates: Several species of lemurs and other small primates
- Reptiles: Tortoises, caimans, and various reptile species
- Birds: A diverse collection of exotic and tropical birds
- Mammals: Including Pollux, a hippopotamus who arrived from a circus in 1986
- Other species: A varied mix of small mammals and other animals
