Monaco — transport

Overview

The Gare de Monaco-Monte-Carlo is the Principality's sole railway station, located entirely underground. Opened on 7 December 1999 to replace the former surface-level station in La Condamine, the new station was designed by AREP and consists of a curved tunnel 466 metres long, 22 metres wide, and 13 metres high. Moving the railway underground freed approximately 51,000 m2 of prime surface land for urban development.

Train Services

The station is served by TER Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur regional trains (branded "Zou!"), with no reservation required:

Towards France:

  • Nice: approximately 23 minutes
  • Cannes, Grasse, and stations along the coast
  • A small number of TGV services connect to Paris Gare de Lyon

Towards Italy:

  • Menton and Ventimiglia: approximately 26 minutes
  • At Ventimiglia, connections are available to Italian Intercity trains towards Genoa, Turin, Milan, and Rome

Frequency: Around 48 daily round trips to Nice on weekdays (up to 55 during Grand Prix week), with reduced service on weekends.

Station Facilities

  • Parking: Approximately 300 spaces in a dedicated car park
  • Tourist information: Information point operated by the Monaco Tourist Office
  • Wi-Fi: Free
  • Accessibility: Lifts and escalators connecting platforms to all surface exits
  • Toilets: Available (1 EUR)

Exits and Connections

The station has six entrances connecting to different parts of Monaco:

  • Monte-Carlo exit: On Pont Sainte-Devote, towards the Exotic Garden and hospital area (lift accessible)
  • Parvis Sainte-Devote exit: At the roundabout between rue Grimaldi and boulevard d'Ostende, giving access to Port Hercule
  • La Condamine exit: In allee Lazare Sauvaigo, serving the Condamine district and market area
  • Fontvieille / Le Rocher exit: On avenue du Prince Pierre, serving Monaco-Ville and Fontvieille (lift accessible)

Multiple CAM bus lines serve stops near the station exits, and taxi ranks are available at several entrances.

Practical Tips

The train is one of the most convenient ways to reach Monaco from Nice Cote d'Azur Airport — take a bus or tram from the airport to Nice-Ville station, then a direct TER train to Monaco (total journey around 45–60 minutes). Tickets can be purchased at the station or via the SNCF app.
