Parc de Fontvieille
A landscaped 4-hectare park in the Fontvieille district, featuring the Princess Grace Rose Garden, playgrounds, and peaceful walking paths
Overview
The Parc de Fontvieille is a four-hectare landscaped park located in the Fontvieille district of Monaco, built on land reclaimed from the sea during the 1980s. The park provides one of the principality's largest open green spaces and serves as a recreational area for residents and visitors, combining manicured gardens, walking paths, a lake, and children's play areas.
History and Development
The Fontvieille district itself was created through a major land reclamation project completed in 1981, which extended Monaco's territory by approximately 35 hectares. The park was an integral part of this development, designed to ensure that the new district included substantial public green space. The park was inaugurated alongside the surrounding residential and commercial developments and has since become one of Monaco's most visited outdoor spaces.
Princess Grace Rose Garden
The most celebrated feature within the park is the Princess Grace Rose Garden, established in 1984 in memory of Princess Grace, who died in 1982. The rose garden contains over 8,000 rose bushes representing more than 300 varieties, arranged in carefully designed beds around a small lake. A portrait of Princess Grace is situated within the garden. The rose garden has won numerous international awards and is at its most spectacular during the blooming season from May through October.
Park Features
Landscaped Paths: Wide, tree-lined walkways traverse the park, providing pleasant routes for walking and jogging. The paths are flat and accessible, making the park suitable for visitors of all ages and mobility levels.
Lake: A central ornamental lake adds a focal point to the park's landscape. The lake attracts various waterfowl and provides a calming presence at the heart of the green space.
Children's Playground: A well-equipped playground area provides facilities for younger visitors, including climbing structures, swings, and play equipment set within a safe, fenced area.
Animal Garden: Adjacent to the main park, a small zoological area houses a collection of domestic and exotic animals, including llamas, hippopotamuses, and various bird species. This facility is popular with families.
Sculpture and Art: Several sculptures and art installations are placed throughout the park, adding cultural interest to the natural setting.
